The Challenge
The client required ongoing environmental monitoring and reporting to maintain compliance with state regulations and the site’s long-term environmental management plan. Specifically, the client needed semi-annual evaluations of landfill cover integrity, landfill gas emissions, and groundwater quality to verify that the site remained stable and protective of human health and the environment. Key challenges included identifying and addressing areas of landfill cover settlement or erosion, monitoring potential landfill gas migration, and tracking groundwater contaminants that could exceed regulatory thresholds. Maintaining consistent data quality and regulatory compliance across multiple monitoring cycles was critical for long-term stewardship of the site.
The Solution
Halker implemented a comprehensive environmental monitoring program consisting of periodic inspections, sampling, and data evaluation in accordance with regulatory standards and the site’s maintenance plan. Field teams conducted landfill cover inspections to identify any signs of erosion, cracking, or vegetative loss that could compromise the cap’s integrity. All observed repair points were documented, prioritized, and addressed to ensure ongoing containment effectiveness.
Landfill gas monitoring was performed quarterly, measuring concentrations of methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen to assess gas generation and potential off-site migration. Readings were collected from permanent monitoring wells and surface probes to ensure full coverage of the landfill area.
Groundwater sampling was conducted at designated wells to evaluate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulfate concentrations. Elevated readings detected in select wells were flagged for continued monitoring and comparison to historical trends to ensure protective corrective actions could be implemented if necessary.
All data were compiled, analyzed, and documented in formal compliance reports submitted in accordance with state environmental requirements. Each report summarized monitoring results, repair actions, and long-term performance trends, providing the client with a clear record of environmental compliance and ongoing stewardship of the landfill site.
