The Challenge
During bridge maintenance activities, crews discovered an active bald eagle nest containing two eaglets within the federally protected ½-mile buffer zone. The unexpected finding presented immediate regulatory and operational challenges, as continued work could risk disturbance to a protected species and violate wildlife protection laws. The project required swift coordination and adaptive measures to maintain compliance while minimizing schedule disruptions.
The Solution
Halker mobilized its environmental team to coordinate with the client and regulatory agencies, suspending noise-sensitive activities within the buffer zone and implementing an adaptive monitoring plan. Our biologists conducted ongoing nest observations to document eagle behavior and ensure compliance with federal protection requirements. Once both eaglets successfully fledged, Halker confirmed regulatory clearance, enabling the safe resumption of construction activities. The result was full compliance, zero environmental violations, and a conservation success story with two new eagles taking flight.
