The Challenge
The client required a comprehensive engineering and design solution for a new saltwater disposal (SWD) facility that aligned with established program standards and specifications. The project needed to maintain consistency with the client’s existing design framework while integrating updated electrical, instrumentation, and control (EI&C) standards. Balancing schedule, cost efficiency, and design accuracy was essential, as multiple deliverables were required to support early construction activities and ensure seamless coordination across disciplines.
The Solution
Halker deployed a multidisciplinary engineering team, including process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation & controls specialists, to execute the full design scope for the SWD facility. The EI&C team utilized master templates reflecting the client’s latest standards, including recent updates from the LEAF design program, which ensured consistency and alignment across all design documentation. Iterative reviews of the 3D model and General Arrangement (GA) and Design Summary (DS) drawings allowed for early validation of the Basis of Design inputs, minimizing rework and controlling project costs.
The mechanical design was informed by lessons learned and established configurations from previous SWD installations, supporting continuity, efficiency, and constructability. Early-phase deliverables included a Plot Composite (PC) package to refine equipment layouts and confirm key design parameters before progressing to detailed engineering.
Halker maintained rigorous internal quality checks to verify alignment with the client’s design preferences and program standards. While most documents were issued for review (IFR) prior to construction, certain critical deliverables such as ETAP studies, mechanical BOM spool lists, and nameplate schedules were released directly for construction (IFC) to support the client’s project timeline. The design package included P&IDs, prefabrication drawings, electrical distribution and panel schedules, heat trace and insulation plans, and a comprehensive instrumentation suite with control narratives, I/O lists, and cause-and-effect charts.
Through disciplined execution, close collaboration with the client, and consistent use of standardized templates and review cycles, Halker delivered a complete, accurate, and high-quality engineering package. The final design met all technical, safety, and program requirements while optimizing constructability and operational reliability.
